Melee, Range and Mage ““ Runescape Combat Triangle |
52 Comments posted in Runescape Skills |

Every Runescape player wants to be an invincible warrior in the game itself.
One of the important factor of an Invincible Warrior is their combat levels.
For non-members, it’s 126, and members, you can get up to 138 combat levels.
Basic Knowledge Of Runescape Combat Triangle
Jagex is very smart to create this Runescape combat triangle so that no one combat skill will dominate the other. You need to have all three, and depends on what your opponent uses, you will need to react accordingly.
Here’s the break-down:
Melee will always win Range
Range will beat Mage
Mage will in turn win Meelee
Now, let me give you a few scenarios on how these combat will work against one another.
Melee versus Range
If you are using Melee, and you saw a Range, you should stay. Your plate armour will be able to stand the Range’s arrow, and caused no harm to your health. So, what you must do is to dash towards him, close range, and start slashing him with your sword into his weak leather.
The closer you get to him, the less damage the arrow can caused you.
But, if you are the Range, you must run. Get it?
Mage versus Melee
Imagine you are Mage now, and out walking around with pocket full of runes. You saw a guy in Meelee, you must start casting your spell. His armour will not be able to take your mage power. And since he going to take some time to come to you, you can always hide in a distance and start casting spells on him.
Range versus Mage
This time, you are a Ranger. You spot a mage, and send a series of arrows his way. Because of the mage robes they wear, it actually lowers their long-range defences.
So, your arrows will fly right into them. Most importantly, your leather armour will protect you from their magic attacks. And they will take some time to recharge and fire again.
In this case, you being the faster ranger will win.
These are just some basic tips, but they are very important. Take note and use them, and use them well.
I will come back with more advanced Runescape combat tips!

True, this is all on the RS website but of course plenty of people don’t look there.

this one helps alot

This is one of the fundamental concepts of the rs combat system. Anyone that is not a total noob would know this. And also, sorry to burst your bubble but as of now mages are seriously underpowered and meleers can easily hit a mage to death because of the robes’ lack of melee defense before the mage can do much dammage because of the dammage cap.

dudes just get 94 mage 99 str 99 attack.. barrage 3 times get dds and fuck the opponent totally!

this helped…harder harder!

well, this is slightly true, but if you truly want to pvp, it isn’t this simple, if you are a melee and you see a range, get the fuck away.
And if you are a mage and you see a melee you better run too. because, the mager may be able to bind, but you can always take your armour off to reduce damage and eventually the mager will either run out of runes or be stupid enough to let you close enough to them and you’d kill em

I personally don’t believe in it. Melee, Range is strongest and Mage is second best.
It’s almost impossible to solo pk as a pure mage. Both meleers and rangers will pwn them, especially on f2p servers. If fighting one on one, even on members, mage still loses because of low max hit.
Magic is usually only use as a support guy in clans, which he will really own but they just can’t solo.
Although this triangle exists on RuneScape, I don’t believe in it. Many meleers wear ranged armour when pking because ranged armour neither sacrifices melee, range or mage defense.
It’s fairly common to see a mage fighting with full dragonhide, ranger with rune full helm or meleer with full d’hide when pking.
“This time, you are a Ranger. You spot a mage, and send a series of arrows his way. Because of the mage robes they wear, it actually lowers their long-range defences.”
How often do you even see a serious mage pker with full blue wizzy? Almost never on f2p worlds.
Besides, magic robes don’t lower long-range defences, just less defence bonus compared to range and melee.
Thank you!

i already knew it what i do is I take off my armour and att them it helps a lot ad sine u cat have armour on if ur mage and do well i kill them usually but i fight extremly high lvls for fun
October 30th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Thicky, pure mage OWN melee fighters.
If solo fight with melee fighters, they dont even have achance against mage, their defence bonus is -100+ to mage, and they can’t even eat food fast enough or run away.
October 30th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
So, ig you prevent from melee attack, you will win.
October 30th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
thanx roy this really helps me alot i didnt know about this before
October 30th, 2009 at 11:18 pm

mages are actualy quite good depends if ur terminology is right. i used to use ancient magiks and full torag on my lvel 99: 75 mage, 81 attk, 79 str, 76 def, 79 hp. and i had no problems killing level 127 melee and rangers. barrows actualy does make quite good melee armour
October 30th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
melee always seems to have the upper hand in all situations
October 31st, 2009 at 12:28 am
@Leo
What I’m trying to say is that most meleers don’t wear melee armour!
What if the meleer wears green d’hide. Will his strength bonus decrease? No!
Besidest think about it. I’m an f2p. The maximum damage with fire blast is 16 whereas the maximum damage for melee can be 20+ with str pot.
I don’t really know members but f2p’s can’t cast those ice barrage thingy.
October 31st, 2009 at 1:17 am
hey look me up on high sores lol i got all those(62mage,61range,and78str and 75att) so i think there all good i actuklt think melee pwns everything but sometimes range
October 31st, 2009 at 1:19 am
Ok all the comments are pretty much wrong.. magic (in members) owns all if you have ancients. Magers will freeze you and usually you won’t be able to move for a while. i think it is callled ice barrage. Melee does beat ranged because d’hide doesn’t have a good defence bonus against melee, but neither does magic. Ranged is also good because i’ve had people hit 50+ on me with ranged and I melee. It just depends on their lvl and the gear they are using. IF they person has void and a darkbow he will probably kill you pretty quickly even if you a mage or a melee. I am a lvl 126 in free worlds and lvl 138 in members world. Acc name:
“god alone 3″

Roy is de man!
October 31st, 2009 at 2:18 am
Yeah, this tip is well known but what people don’t know is that range a magic increase combat level. All my friend think strength, attack, and defence increase combat level. That’s why I’m now a higher level. >:)

Once you think about it it makes sense. So I would have to say this is true but then again I’m level 41 and have been killed plenty of times by arrows so still be careful and don’t get cocky!
November 1st, 2009 at 4:29 am
what if your a mem and the ranger has 99 range and enchated arrows would the melee stilll win
November 1st, 2009 at 10:37 am
roy, that is another good tip
what if you have all three what should you use so that no one attacks you
November 1st, 2009 at 9:06 pm
could you make a segment on monsters that drop good rare items. plz & thank you
November 2nd, 2009 at 12:53 am
honestly range can beat anything if you know how to PK right. Im have a Range tanker and fight Melee and range and win. Magic owns that account.
I also have a pure rang (75 range 60 mage) My range owns pure melee because i know how to pk, also its 50/50 with magic because my magic level is high enough to block some damage
November 2nd, 2009 at 4:59 am
cool
November 2nd, 2009 at 5:46 am
hey every listen ok what you have to do is have 40att 40def –str above 40 with at least 50 mage and have a rune shield and plain staff on you when you see a melee person bombard them with a high lvl spell until the are close then start poundin on them with the staff run away eat mage for a sec and pound with the staff until dead eat if necessary 70% chance of winning if around the same lvl that only works on f2p because lvl 40 is the rune lvl forget about range cuz it will do only minimal damage compared to melee and mage combined as you also have tele spells for quick escape
November 2nd, 2009 at 10:03 pm
That’s why I’m a melee, I’m fast and dirty!!! >:) I own at RS I’m a level 54 and I beat a level 88 and a 61! I own, but the level 136 killed me in 1 hit with a god sword >.> And slashed the **** out of me with the Dragon Claws…. Oh yeah and owned my face with his fists
yeah yeah…
November 2nd, 2009 at 10:05 pm
I’m not that in too magic seriously… The only thing I like about magic is the telloport and Telekentic grab
November 2nd, 2009 at 10:12 pm
lol i rock!
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:39 pm
in my opinion, mage, melee and range are all balanced in a way that all skills are equal. you might say that a melee PKer would own a mage, and i agree, but only if the mager is stupid enough to let him get close enough.
“If you are using Melee, and you saw a Range, you should stay. Your plate armour will be able to stand the Range’s arrow, and caused no harm to your health”
have you actually ever seen a range PKer fighting melee? range never runs away from anything, especially if this is some guy who has bind on him too. then he’ll just bind you and keep ranging from far away… i’m always hitting my max against melee when i’m using range. so in a way, range is the best, but you need to have some experience in pking.
“This time, you are a Ranger. You spot a mage, and send a series of arrows his way. Because of the mage robes they wear, it actually lowers their long-range defences.”
if a mage is smart enough, he’ll still be able to destroy a ranger, simply by eating at correct times and using autocast. however, i do agree on the fact that mage in f2p is WEAK – not to mention hard to get to the 16-max-hit mark.
i personally choose melee over anything else, because it is balanced, and i can still fight using dragonhide, and while i sacrifice my slash, stab etc. defence, i still get a decent enough mage and range defence. combined with a scimitar or some other fast weapon, that would be a really good combo in PK.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:46 pm
roy lol i used to die till i read this i rich now:) go 15 rune skimmy 3 d skimmy full dragon dragon mace d claws all gs:) from killin with mage ranged and melee i own lol

November 7th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
the best way to make cash on runescape is lobsters 26 lobsters are 9k so fish them then put in closest bank go to grand exshang then sale out of bank 1 millon lobters are 365 millon cash so fish lobbters there 365 dollars each
November 8th, 2009 at 4:29 am
If you see a person around 57+ ranging and seems like pure…chances are he’ll have 60+ range…so watch out when you fight ppl your lvl…they might just have a high stat than yours..example: you have 50 strength..they might have 70 /w same cb lvl..
just take a decent accout /w a high lvl in each of the fighting skills..these days…every1s a pure with about lvl 1 defense..take advantage of that!
November 8th, 2009 at 4:42 am
also…in p2p…if you see a mage…dont bother with him…he’ll cast vengence and all sorts of crap and you wont know what hit ya…the best thing to do is get lvl 70+ ranged, for max damage, rune cbow, rune defender and 94+mage..acient magiks…untouchable…
if you see a mage in free worlds…Get at him..use protect from mage prayer..and shut ‘em down…his max would probably be a 14 even /w 99mage due to the low-max hit of 16 /w mage in f2p worlds and your protection from mage prayer…
November 8th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

November 9th, 2009 at 3:20 am
Yeah my friend on AOG (armies on gielnor a funorb game) taught me this but i thought it only applied to that =/
November 9th, 2009 at 11:12 pm
It’s true, this is all obvious, but what people don’t know is that there are tricks to dodging the combat triangle: Melee warriors with a weapon such as the whip or the Dragon Scimitar and mage armor will stand mage attacks, while also beating archers’ weak leather armor. Having a platebody and ranged chaps is also a way of archers to get protection from melee without loosing magic protection, and mages can use the chaps with robe combinations to defend themselves, not only that, they can use ice attacks to block out melee damage.
November 17th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
hmm….the mage style seems to be from rsc where if one failed to cast a spell properly, one needed to wait for a short cooldown before casting again. however the general statements in the guide is correct.
November 22nd, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Look guys, I am not a pure of anything. I have rather balanced combat skills, (70 atk 70 str 65 range and 56 mage)
I have to say that nothing of what I do in PvP matchs any of his information. I take 3 sets of armour; Plate, dhide, and mage, along with plenty of runes and arrows. If I am fighting a mage, I use dhide. if range, plate. If meele, I use a dhide and plate. I know it sounds stupid, but I actually am pretty good at it. KthxBAI!
November 27th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
Out of the combat triangle, my highest is melee, 2nd is mage and you should know that range is my last.
I’m only LVL 2 in range!

In truth, you will always wear either the full rune outfit (non-members) or the whole dragon outfit (members)
You will only change your weapon choice.
